Propylene glycol, generally referring to 1,2-propanediol, has the chemical formula C₃H₈O₂. Because it contains two hydroxyl groups, it is classified as a diol. Propylene glycol is typically a slightly sweet, odorless, colorless, transparent, viscous liquid. Chemically, it belongs to the diol family and is miscible with many solvents such as water, acetone, and chloroform. It generally does not cause irritation and has very low volatility.

 

Propylene glycol is a widely used organic compound. Its core characteristic is that different purity levels correspond to drastically different applications and should not be mixed. Purity determines the level of harmful impurities (such as diethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, and heavy metals) in the product, directly affecting the safety and compliance of the final product. This product is mainly divided into industrial grade, food grade, and pharmaceutical grade. Industrial grade propylene glycol has the lowest standard requirements among the three grades, with a purity of 99.0%-99.5%. The main controlled indicators are basic indicators such as purity, moisture, and acidity, while the control over impurities such as heavy metals, chlorides, and sulfates is relatively lenient. Food grade propylene glycol has a purity range of 99.5%-99.9%, with strict limits on impurities such as heavy metals, chlorides, sulfates, and residue on ignition. Pharmaceutical grade propylene glycol follows pharmacopoeia standards (such as USP, EP, or the Chinese Pharmacopoeia), and the standards are the most stringent. The most critical difference between pharmaceutical grade and industrial and food grades lies in the extremely strict limits on diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, two harmful impurities, typically not exceeding 0.10% each, to ensure the safety of drug use.

2. PG USP is also applied in indirect contact food application,such as low temperature heat-transfer fluid in the brewing,dairy and ice cream industries,food storage and handing,facility equipment cleaner fluid or a solvent for printing inks
