Tri(2,3-dibromopropyl)isocyanurate, abbreviated as TDBPIC, is a brominated flame retardant that combines high bromine content with excellent thermal stability. This product appears as a white to pale yellow crystalline powder with a melting range between 100–110°C. Its thermal decomposition temperature exceeds 220°C, and it exhibits good UV stability, making it suitable for outdoor products requiring weather resistance.

Its molecular design ingeniously integrates two functional structures: a thermally stable triazine-trione (isocyanurate) ring at the core, surrounded by three highly brominated 2,3-dibromopropyl groups. This structure yields a bromine content of approximately 65%. During combustion, it efficiently releases bromine radicals that capture active radicals required for the combustion chain reaction in the gas phase, thereby rapidly interrupting flame propagation-the primary mechanism of its flame-retardant action. Concurrently, the core isocyanurate ring promotes carbon layer formation on the material surface at high temperatures, providing auxiliary barrier and smoke suppression effects in the condensed phase.

In polymer applications, TDBPIC primarily functions as an additive flame retardant suitable for polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, unsaturated polyesters, and various rubbers and elastomers. Within these substrates, it effectively elevates flame retardancy ratings at relatively low loading levels, aiding in achieving UL94 V-0 or V-2 standards while minimally impacting material processing flow properties. Furthermore, the brominated alkyl groups at its molecular ends exhibit reactive properties. Under specific conditions-such as during the curing of unsaturated polyesters-these groups can partially participate in cross-linking reactions. This enhances the durability of flame retardancy and reduces the risk of flame retardant migration during prolonged use or thermal exposure.

In the textile sector, TDBPIC can be applied to fabric finishing through processes like dip-coating or coating, or used as a reactive monomer in synthesizing inherently flame-retardant fibers. This provides an efficient technical option for developing durable flame-retardant textiles.

It is crucial to emphasize that as a brominated flame retardant, its application requires close attention to evolving global environmental regulations (such as RoHS, REACH, and POPs regulations) to ensure product compliance with target market requirements. Selection must involve a comprehensive evaluation balancing flame retardancy efficiency, material performance, cost, and environmental regulatory compliance.
