Propylene glycol, generally referring to 1,2-propanediol, has the chemical formula C₃H₈O₂. Due to the presence of two hydroxyl groups (–OH) in its molecular structure, it is classified as a diol. Propylene glycol is typically a slightly sweet, odorless, colorless, transparent, and viscous liquid. Chemically, it belongs to the diol family and exhibits excellent miscibility with a wide range of solvents, including water, acetone, chloroform, and many other polar and non‑polar organic solvents. It is generally non‑irritating to the skin and has very low volatility, which makes it safe and convenient for handling, storage, and transportation across various industrial applications.

Application

1. Used to produce unsaturated resin, polyether, epoxy resins, etc.

2. Used for organic synthesis of solvents, dehydrating agents and gas chromatography stationary liquids, synthesizing emulsifier, demulsifier, etc.

3. Used as a chemical intermediate for pesticide fungicide difenoconazole

4. Used in cellophane, plasticizer and pharmaceutical industry

5. The aqueous solution of propylene glycol is an effective antifreeze

 

Safety and Storage

1. The product should be stored in a cool and ventilated warehouse. The warehouse temperature should not exceed 37°C and the relative humidity should be controlled below 60%.

2. It should be stored separately from oxidants, reductants, acids, etc. It is prohibited to mix them in storage and it is necessary to keep containers sealed

3. It should be kept away from kindling and heat sources and it is prohibited to use mechanical equipment and tools that are easy to generate sparks

4. The storage area should be equipped with emergency treatment devices for leakage. The cushion layer should be provided at the bottom layer when it is stored by stacks. The stacking height should not exceed 2m
