Trioctyl Phosphate (TOP), also known as phosphoric acid trioctyl ester or tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, is a high-purity organophosphorus compound. Trioctyl Phosphate is characterized by its exceptional solubility characteristics, being practically insoluble in water but readily miscible with most organic solvents including alcohols, ketones, ethers, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents, which makes it an outstanding plasticizer and solvent for numerous industrial applications.

The primary industrial application of Trioctyl Phosphate lies in its role as a highly effective plasticizer for synthetic resins, particularly for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), vinyl chloride copolymers, polyurethanes, and other engineering plastics, where it provides superior flexibility, low-temperature resilience, and enhanced processing characteristics without causing surface migration or volatility issues common with other plasticizers. In comparison to shorter-chain phosphate esters, Trioctyl Phosphate offers reduced water solubility and lower volatility, making it especially suitable for applications requiring long-term durability and resistance to extraction. As a flame-retardant plasticizer, TOP contributes significantly to improving the fire safety profile of polymer formulations, reducing flame spread and smoke generation in products such as PVC flooring, conveyor belts, wire and cable insulation, automotive interior components, synthetic leather, and protective coatings. Beyond plasticization, Trioctyl Phosphate serves as an efficient solvent and extractant in hydrometallurgy and rare earth processing, where its high selectivity and extraction efficiency make it valuable for separating metal ions from complex aqueous solutions, including the purification of uranium, thorium, and other strategic metals.

In the chemical industry, TOP is widely utilized as a defoamer and foam control agent in aqueous systems including paper pulping, textile processing, wastewater treatment, and fermentation processes, where it effectively eliminates persistent foam without negatively impacting product quality or downstream operations. The compound also finds significant use as a leveling agent and wetting aid in coatings, printing inks, and pigment dispersions, as a lubricant additive and extreme pressure agent in metalworking fluids and industrial lubricants, and as a modifier in adhesive and sealant formulations to improve flexibility and adhesion properties. In addition, Trioctyl Phosphate is employed as a coalescing agent in water-based architectural paints, as a dielectric fluid in electrical capacitors and transformers, as a processing aid in rubber compounding, and as a component in synthetic fiber spinning finishes, where its chemical stability and compatibility with various polymer systems ensure consistent performance. For packaging and storage, Trioctyl Phosphate is typically supplied in 200 kg net galvanized iron drums, IBC containers of 1,000 kg, or isotanks for bulk orders, and should be stored in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from oxidizing agents, strong acids, and direct sunlight, where it maintains excellent chemical stability for up to 12 to 24 months under proper storage conditions.
