Advantages of Naphthol
01.

Exceptional Color Fastness

Naphthol-based dyes offer superior resistance to fading when exposed to intense light, repeated washing, rubbing, and perspiration.

02.

Vibrant and Deep Shades

It consistently produces bright, vivid colors and deep hues that are difficult to achieve with other dyes.

03.

Cost-Effectiveness

Naphthols are highly efficient, yielding a massive array of color shades when combined with different diazo bases, which makes them highly economical for commercial production.

04.

Versatility in Fabrics

It can be used across a broad range of materials, including cotton, wool, silk, and synthetic fibers.

Applications of Naphthol

01

Pigment Production

Naphthols are integral to high‑quality pigment manufacture. Because pigments demand exceptional purity and solubility, suppliers adopt stringent handling protocols: glass‑lined vessels prevent metal leaching, and the dyes are stored under controlled conditions to avoid contamination.

02

Fabric & Textile Manufacturing

Textile producers rely on naphthol dyes such as Naphthol to unlock a vibrant palette of colors. The dyes fastness properties reduce the need for post‑treatment steps, streamline production, and ensure consistent colorfastness across large batches.

03

Tie‑and‑Dye and Hand‑Printing

Artisans and small‑scale operators in the tie‑and‑dye market favor naphthols for their versatility and ease of use. The dyes deliver bright, saturated hues and allow intricate patterning without compromising durability—critical for both contemporary fashion and cultural crafts.

Raw Materials for Naphthol Production

Naphthalene
Naphthalene is the primary raw material used in naphthol production. It is obtained from the distillation of coal tar or crude oil and serves as the precursor for both 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol.

Sulfuric Acid
In most naphthol production methods, sulfuric acid acts as a catalyst for the sulfonation of naphthalene.

Sodium Hydroxide
Sodium hydroxide is used to neutralize the reaction mixture and to facilitate the hydrolysis of naphthalene sulfonates.

Water
Water is used as a solvent to dissolve reactants and aid in the reaction processes.

Precautions in Naphthol Dyeing

The alkalinity of the naphthol bath shall not drop below the prescribed limit , otherwise the naphthol may precipitate.

Formaldehyde shall not be used when working at more than 50oC or when the material is to be dried after naphthol application.

Material shall be protected from water spotting, steam, acid and chlorine fumes, and exposure to sunlight after naphthol application.

Use of excess salt in naphthol bath may result into precipitation of the bath.

The temperature is very important in base preparation stem, otherwise diazotization may not take place.

Sodium acetate must be added to the developing bath just before the use, otherwise base will become unstable due to fall in concentration of HCl.

Hydroextraction time must not be too long, which may result into light spots after development.

Material shall be rinsed without delay after developing, otherwise the mechanically held excess developing liquor will undergo some decomposition and cause deposition of dark colored spots, which will be difficult to remove.

It is important to use sufficient amount of alkali binding agents, otherwise it will result into precipitation of developing bath.

FAQ

Q: Is naphthol an alcohol or not?

A: Naphthol is not an alcohol. Although both have a functional OH group, the OH group in naphthol is attached directly to the carbon of the benzene ring.

Q: What is the odor of a naphthol?

A: Alpha-naphthol (also known as 1-naphthol) has a distinct, unpleasant phenolic odour. It smells very similar to carbolic acid or standard household disinfectants, often described as an intensely chemical, somewhat tar-like or medicinal scent.

Q: What is the chemical name for naphthol?

A: 1-Naphthol, or α-naphthol, is an organic compound with the formula C 10H 7OH. It is a fluorescent white solid. 1-Naphthol differs from its isomer 2-naphthol by the location of the hydroxyl group on the naphthalene ring. The naphthols are naphthalene homologues of phenol.

Q: What is naphthol used for in pharmacy?

A: Naphthols are primarily utilized in pharmacy as crucial chemical intermediates and reagents. They serve as building blocks in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), such as the beta-blocker nadolol and the antidepressant sertraline. Additionally, they are employed in laboratory settings for the detection of carbohydrates and amino acids.

Q: Is naphthol a base or acid?

A: 2-Naphthol, a prototypical organic “photoacid,” is a weak acid in the ground state, but shows enhanced acidity in the state (pKa = 9.5, pKa* = 2.8, ΔpKa = −6.7), and can deprotonate to the solvent producing an electronically excited conjugate base.

As one of the most professional naphthol manufacturers and suppliers in China, we offer a wide range of products with superior quality. Please feel free to buy high-grade naphthol made in China here from our factory. For price consultation, contact us.
