Key Feature
Halogen-Free Flame Retardant
BDP is a phosphorus-based, halogen-free flame retardant. It provides an alternative approach to halogen-containing flame retardant systems for engineering plastics and polymer formulations. Its use is particularly relevant in applications where manufacturers are looking for phosphorus-based flame retardant solutions for engineering resin systems.
High Thermal Stability
BDP offers good thermal stability and is suitable for polymer processing at relatively high temperatures. This characteristic is important for engineering plastics such as PC/ABS and other resin systems processed under elevated-temperature conditions.
Low Volatility
Compared with some conventional phosphate flame retardants, BDP is characterized by relatively low volatility. This can be beneficial during high-temperature polymer processing, where excessive volatility may lead to processing losses or changes in formulation performance.
Good Hydrolytic Stability
BDP also provides good hydrolytic stability, an important property for engineering plastics that may be exposed to moisture or humid aging conditions during processing or service.
Application
PC/ABS Flame Retardant:PC/ABS is one of the key application areas for BDP.BDP can be incorporated into PC/ABS formulations to improve flame-retardant performance while supporting the processing requirements of engineering plastic compounds. It is used in applications such as electrical and electronic housings and other engineered plastic components. For customers developing flame-retardant PC/ABS compounds, BDP can be evaluated as part of a phosphorus-based flame retardant system.
Polycarbonate (PC):BDP is also used in polycarbonate-based engineering resin formulations where improved flame resistance is required.
Its high thermal stability and relatively low volatility make it suitable for high-temperature processing environments commonly associated with engineering plastics.
PPO/HIPS and Modified PPO:BDP can be used in PPO/HIPS and modified polyphenylene oxide (mPPO) systems as a phosphorus-based flame retardant. These engineering plastics are used in applications where a combination of mechanical properties, dimensional stability, heat resistance, and flame performance is required.
Epoxy Resins:BDP can also be incorporated into selected epoxy resin formulations to improve flame-retardant performance.
Research has demonstrated the use of BDP-based systems in epoxy resins, while polymeric BDP derivatives have also been investigated for improving flame retardancy and reducing heat release in epoxy composites.
Electrical and Electronic Applications:Phosphorus-based flame retardants such as BDP are used in engineering plastics for electrical and electronic applications where flame resistance is an important material requirement.BDP has been identified as a flame retardant for engineering plastics used in electrical and electronic equipment, including PC/ABS and related resin systems.
BDP in Polymer Flame Retardant Formulations
The effectiveness of BDP depends on the polymer matrix, formulation composition, processing conditions, and required flame-retardant performance. In PC/ABS systems, BDP may also be used together with other phosphorus-based flame retardants to achieve the desired formulation performance. Certain commercial technical data specifically describe the use of BDP in combination with RDP or TPP as a synergistic flame-retardant system. Therefore, the optimal BDP loading level should be determined through formulation testing rather than applying a single dosage universally across different polymer systems.
Packaging and Storage
Packing:BDP is commonly supplied in drums or IBC containers for industrial applications. Commercial packaging examples include 250 kg drums and approximately 1,000–1,250 kg IBC containers, although actual packaging options depend on the supplier and grade.
Storage:Store the product in a sealed container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, protected from moisture and excessive heat. Customers should always refer to the latest SDS and product-specific storage recommendations before handling or storing the material.
