1,2-Pentanediol is a colorless, transparent liquid with no odor and a slightly bitter-sweet taste. It has strong hygroscopicity. The product purity can reach 99.5% or higher. In terms of solubility, it is soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, dibutyl phthalate, and castor oil, while it is nearly insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene, carbon tetrachloride, mineral oil, and linseed oil. The product is stable and non-reactive under normal storage and use conditions. It exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, inhibiting the growth of bacteria, yeast, and mold. The boiling point is relatively high (approximately 206°C). It is prone to air oxidation during atmospheric distillation, so distillation under reduced pressure is recommended. For storage, keep in a cool, well-ventilated warehouse with temperatures not exceeding 37°C, away from ignition sources and heat, and separate from oxidizing agents and food-grade chemicals.
