Dichlorobenzyl Alcohol

2,4-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₇H₆Cl₂O and a molecular weight of 177.028. This product appears as white to pale yellow crystals, with a density of 1.392 g/cm³. Its boiling point at standard atmospheric pressure is 268.38°C, and its solubility in water at 20°C is 0.1%. It is soluble in organic solvents such as methanol and ethanol.

This product is primarily used as a pharmaceutical intermediate and serves as a preservative in cosmetics, disinfectants, and oral care products, with a maximum permitted concentration of 0.15%. It can also be used in the preparation of sterilizing agents and disinfectants for products such as sterilizing ointments and oral rinses.

It must be stored in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry place. When stored properly, it remains effective for at least 24 months.

1. Cosmetic preservatives (green label,one of the 51 approved preservatives for cosmetics):Effective against fungi,used in combination with preservatives such as phenoxyethanol,with a limit of 0.15%.

2. Pharmaceutical and household products: As an antifungal active ingredient,it is recommended to use 0.3%11.5% in formulas such as foot cream,lotion,cough syrup,mouthwash,etc.

3. Medical disinfectant coupling agent: recommended dosage is 0.3%-0.5%.

Primarily based on its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, it can destroy bacterial cell walls, leading to bacterial death, thereby achieving a bactericidal effect. It also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which can alleviate inflammatory responses and have a certain therapeutic effect on some skin diseases and other inflammatory conditions.
