p-Hydroxyacetophenone is a white, needle-like crystal at room temperature. It is flammable and readily soluble in hot water, methanol, ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, and benzene, but sparingly soluble in petroleum ether. This product is used as a raw material for the manufacture of cholagogues and other organic syntheses. Animal studies have shown that it increases bile secretion in rats, while also increasing the excretion of bile solids, bile acids, and bilirubin. It has a similar effect on carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage. Clinically, it is used to treat hepatitis and has demonstrated some efficacy in alleviating jaundice. Therefore, ingestion of this product is harmful, and contact may cause irritation to the eyes, respiratory system, and skin.
