Hydrogenated castor oil is a derivative of castor oil. It is obtained by processing castor oil through a series of processes including filtration, heating and dehydration, hydrogenation, and catalyst removal via filtration. Its main component is 13-hydroxystearic acid triglyceride. This product is a waxy compound with a hard texture, high melting point, and is virtually odorless and tasteless. Hydrogenated castor oil is generally supplied in flake and powder form, and its color ranges from milky white to white.

This product is stable and is a high-melting-point waxy solid. Because of this property, it is commonly used as a thickener, hardener, lubricant, sustained-release agent, emulsifier, and ointment base.

1. Thickener and Hardener: Hydrogenated castor oil is mainly used as a hardener in ointments, creams, and suppositories to adjust the consistency of the formulation.

2. Lubricant: Hydrogenated castor oil can be used as a lubricant for tablets. For some tablets that stick together during compression, hydrogenated castor oil is the best choice. For example, clopidogrel bisulfate tablets use hydrogenated castor oil as a lubricant.

3. Sustained-Release or Controlled-Release Material: Hydrogenated castor oil can be used as a coating film or to form a solid matrix, playing a role in sustained-release or controlled-release. For example, methoxynaphthylpropionic acid controlled-release tablets use hydrogenated castor oil as a controlled-release material.

4. Ointment and suppository base: For ointments and suppositories that require vegetable oil or liquid paraffin, hydrogenated castor oil can be used. Since hydrogenated castor oil is a waxy solid, it has a high viscosity after melting, which can greatly reduce the amount of oil or oil phase used, and the ointment is smoother and finer.

 

 

Hydrogenated castor oil is stable at temperatures up to 1508℃. Clear, stable, chloroform solutions containing up to 15% w/v of hydrogenated castor oil may be produced. Hydrogenated castor oil may also be dissolved at temperatures greater than 908℃ in polar solvents and mixtures of aromatic and polar solvents, although the hydrogenated castor oil precipitates out on cooling below 908℃. Hydrogenated castor oil should be stored in a well-closed container in a cool, dry place.
