UV-P, also known as Drometrizole, is a benzotriazole UV absorber used to protect polymers, coatings and other organic materials from degradation caused by ultraviolet radiation.
As an organic UV absorber, UV-P selectively absorbs harmful UV radiation and converts the absorbed energy into a less damaging form through molecular relaxation. This helps reduce the photo-degradation of polymer chains and can improve resistance to discoloration, surface deterioration, cracking and loss of physical properties during prolonged exposure to UV light.
UV-P is particularly suitable for applications where maintaining the original appearance and performance of polymer materials is important. Its combination of UV absorption, polymer compatibility and relatively low visible-light absorption makes Drometrizole useful in selected plastics, coatings, adhesives and other polymer formulations.

Key Features of UV-326
The molecular structure of Drometrizole belongs to the hydroxyphenyl benzotriazole family. Benzotriazole UV absorbers are widely used in polymer stabilization because they can provide effective absorption of UV radiation while limiting interference with visible light.
UV-P UV absorber can help protect polymer matrices against UV-induced photo-oxidative degradation. Depending on the polymer and formulation, its use may help maintain color stability, surface appearance and mechanical performance during outdoor or light exposure.
Another important characteristic is its suitability for incorporation into organic polymer systems. The actual performance of UV-P depends on the resin type, additive concentration, processing temperature, product thickness, pigment system and expected exposure conditions.
Application of UV-326
UV-P is used as a UV absorber for plastics and polymer materials where protection against ultraviolet radiation is required. It can be incorporated into selected thermoplastics, elastomer systems and other polymer formulations to improve resistance to sunlight and artificial UV exposure.
In plastics, UV-P can be used in formulations where long-term color retention and resistance to photo-aging are important. It is suitable for selected applications involving polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC and other polymer systems, subject to compatibility and formulation testing.
In coatings and paints, Drometrizole can be incorporated into suitable formulations to reduce UV-induced degradation of the coating and underlying polymer substrate. This makes UV-P relevant to outdoor coatings and other applications where appearance and durability are important.
UV-P can also be considered for adhesives, sealants, rubber and other polymer-based materials that require additional protection against ultraviolet radiation. In these applications, the selection of the appropriate UV absorber should take into account the chemical composition and processing conditions of the formulation.
For demanding outdoor applications, UV-P can be combined with HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers) and antioxidants. These stabilizers work through different mechanisms and may provide complementary protection against photo-oxidative degradation.
FAQ
Q: Can UV-P be used together with HALS?
A: Yes. UV-P and HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers) can provide complementary protection in polymer stabilization systems. UV-P primarily absorbs harmful UV radiation, while HALS work mainly by suppressing free-radical reactions associated with photo-oxidative degradation. Their combination can therefore be considered for plastics, coatings and other materials requiring improved long-term UV and weathering resistance.
Q: Why does a plastic formulation still turn yellow after adding a UV absorber?
A: The addition of a UV absorber does not necessarily prevent all types of yellowing. Discoloration can result from photo-oxidation, thermal degradation during processing, pigment interactions, insufficient stabilizer concentration or incompatibility between additives and the polymer matrix. In outdoor applications, a stabilization system combining UV absorber, HALS and antioxidants may provide more comprehensive protection than using UV-P alone.
Q: What causes UV absorber migration or blooming in plastics?
A: UV absorber migration or surface blooming can be associated with poor compatibility between the additive and polymer matrix, excessive dosage, processing conditions, polymer crystallinity and the physical properties of the stabilizer. If UV-P appears on the material surface after processing or aging, the formulation should be evaluated for additive concentration, compatibility and processing temperature. Selecting a more compatible stabilizer or optimizing the overall formulation may help reduce migration.
