EDTA-4Na is the fully neutralized sodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, supplied as a white crystalline powder or granular material. With all four carboxyl groups converted into sodium salts, the product exhibits extremely high water solubility and dissolves rapidly to form clear solutions without residual turbidity. A 1% aqueous solution typically shows strong alkalinity, with a pH range of approximately 10.5–11.5, which distinguishes EDTA-4Na from partially neutralized EDTA salts.

This complete sodium salt form combines two functional advantages in one material. On one hand, it retains the strong and broad chelating capacity characteristic of EDTA, effectively binding divalent and trivalent metal ions such as Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Fe³⁺, and Cu²⁺. On the other hand, its inherent alkalinity allows it to contribute to pH adjustment and buffering in alkaline systems, reducing or partially replacing the need for separate alkali additions in certain processes.

In textile processing, EDTA-4Na plays an important role from pretreatment through dyeing. During desizing, scouring, and especially hydrogen peroxide bleaching, trace metal ions can catalyze uncontrolled peroxide decomposition, leading to fiber damage, uneven whiteness, and reduced process efficiency. EDTA-4Na quickly complexes these ions, stabilizing the bleaching bath and ensuring controlled oxidation while preserving fiber strength and fabric quality.

In reactive dyeing of cotton, EDTA-4Na continues to act as a water softener and metal ion sequestrant, preventing interference with dye fixation. At the same time, its alkaline nature helps maintain a stable dye bath pH, supporting consistent fixation reactions and improving shade reproducibility between dye lots.

Beyond textiles, EDTA-4Na is widely used in industrial cleaning and water treatment for scale removal and hardness control, in detergents and household chemicals to enhance cleaning efficiency, and in agriculture as a chelating carrier for micronutrient fertilizers. Its combination of fast solubility, strong chelation, and alkalinity makes it especially suitable for processes requiring rapid preparation and operation under alkaline conditions.
